On a cold day a wool sock does more than any shoe. Wool holds warmth even when the sock is slightly damp, which is why it is used in the mountains, at home and by people who work outdoors. A good pair also makes winter shoes more comfortable.
Merino and cushioned socks

Wash at a low temperature, inside out, and skip the tumble dryer: the wool keeps its shape and softness for longer.
